The Phone Call
That Almost Changed my Life
The phone’s ring made me jump. Sitting next to it with the “Unpaid Bills” file in my hand and my concentration firmly fixed elsewhere, the sound was a sudden, unexpected intrusion. Startled, I reached for the phone, glad for a momentary reprieve. The bills could wait a few minutes—assuming, that is, that the caller wasn’t a creditor.
“Hi, Jessica, it’s Lisa,” came the reply. I closed my eyes. I’d known this call was coming sooner or later, and since Molly’s call the day before, had known it was imminent. Yet being preoccupied with the bills, my mind had not been immediately prepared, either for the call itself or for the emotions it triggered.
